Abstract
The University of Toronto had the only doctoral program in social work education in Canada for many years. There are now seven programs and one under development. This article provides a description of the unique and strongest features of each of these programs and identifies a number of challenges that must be met to improve the quality of doctoral education in Canada. Some of these challenges include: the need for more resources for students and programs; the diversity of students' research needs; faculty retirements; better library resources; improved research infrastructure; the need to equip students with a broader range of both quantitative and qualitative research methods and the ability to develop research partnerships with agencies and consumers; and the emphasis on working with issues of diversity both in curriculum development and classroom teaching.
