Abstract
The monologue for Canadian playwright, director, and producer, Judith Thompson is direct and intimate: “there is no looking away from it, we must go on the journey of the monologue … even if … she is breathing fire that burns the air we breathe” (She Speaks viii). Drawing on this imperative to speak inherent in the monologue form, the women of Thompson's Body and Soul ensemble—Lois, Francine, Janice, Polly, Judy, Barbie, Gloria, Pauline, Ruth, Jeannine, Ann Marie, Rhonda, and Glenda—embarked on that journey to create their play. The other necessary element of the monologue, however, is the listener, and while working within a corporate marketing strategy the women found the audience to share their understanding of beauty and body, and their real experiences of identity and desire, and negotiation and change.
