Abstract
De institutione musica, trait de musique compos vers 510 qui synthtise les principes fondamentaux de la thorie pythagoricienne et platonicienne de la musique et qui, de l'poque 1 . La consonance ne concerne donc pas tant les sons qui entretiennent une relation d'identit ou de similitude, que ceux qui se distinguent les uns des autres selon un rapport d'ingalit. Il n'y aurait pas besoin de consonance, en effet, s'il n'y avait au pralable une diffrence. La consonance dsigne du mme coup la rsolution d'une disparit entre des sons distincts (comme entre toutes sortes d'lments dissemblables), de sorte qu'ils s'unissent et composent un ensemble dont dit que les sons qui, faute de rapport d'ingalit, ne discordent pas (quae nulla inaequalitate discordant), ne ralisent aucune consonance du tout 2 . concordia discors, qui remonte l'Antiquit, il n'y a pas d'harmonie sans disharmonie 3 .
