Abstract
Des premiers récits d’inspiration romantique aux derniers grands romans utopistes, l’oeuvre de Zola se déploie à travers des variations multiples en fonction des transformations de la conjoncture culturelle et sociale et de l’évolution de l’auteur sur le plan idéologique et politique. Cependant, derrière ces modifications bien réelles, on retrouve parfois une vision du monde qui demeure inchangée et qui fixe son oeuvre dans une sorte d’immobilité. En témoigne singulièrement une certaine conception du peuple comme « être femme » qui, acquise sous l’influence de Michelet notamment, imprègne son oeuvre d’un bout à l’autre. On examine ici comment cette figure se déploie de La confession de Claude jusqu’à Travail, en passant par Germinal, dans le cadre d’une vision profondément conservatrice du monde derrière les aspects plus progressistes apparaissant à la surface de l’oeuvre.
