Les différences géomorphologiques des Petites Antilles induisent des variations de facteurs climatiques qui influencent les processus de sélection des espèces. Dans les îles montagneuses, les gradients pluviométriques altitudinaux délimitent des étages bioclimatiques conditionnant le développement de types forestiers potentiels. D’inégales répartitions spatiales à l’échelle de l’archipel, ceux-ci diffèrent tant du point de vue structural et architectural que biocénotique. D’une manière générale, chaque étage végétal est caractérisé par un potentiel floristique (le stock ou la collection d’espèces) à partir duquel les divers biotopes conditionnent les prépondérances floristiques (les phytocénoses). Entre ces microsystèmes insulaires, les différences mésologiques ont induit une diversité biologique élevée que l’anthropisation accentua dès le début de l’occupation amérindienne, il y a environ 4 000 ans. Au regard des divers statuts politiques et dans la perspective du développement durable, la conservation de la biodiversité, primordiale pour la gestion territoriale future, ne pourra être efficiente qu’à l’échelle archipélagique.
