Cet article calcule et présente des données quantitatives sur l'impact sur l'environnement pour un groupe de pays d'Europe de l'Ouest et un groupe de pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest. Six problématiques majeures sont traitées: (1) l'utilisation de terres par l'homme, (2) la modification de la composition de l’atmosphère, (3) la diminution des ressources en eau, (4) la perturbation du cycle de l’azote, (5) la perte de biodiversité, (6) l’épuisement de pêcheries. L'article fait ressortir d'une part l'importance du choix des indicateurs quant aux résultats atteints, et d'autre part la part proportionnellement plus importante d'impacts infligés dans les pays africains qu'européens, en regard de leur niveau économique respectif. Plusieurs explications de ce résultat sont proposées en conclusion, requerrant l'accroissement de la prise en compte d'objectifs de développement durable en Afrique.
