Résumé Depuis le début des années 1990, les questions liées aux répercussions environnementales des entreprises préoccupent de plus en plus les entreprises. Aussi, les réponses de ces dernières aux défis de l’environnement naturel s’inscrivent dans une «gestion environnementale». Comme celle-ci revêt de multiples formes, il règne une grande confusion sur sa signification. Cet article propose une classification de la gestion environnementale des entreprises selon trois plans. Sur le plan opérationnel, les entreprises réduisent l’impact de leurs pratiques polluantes sur la biosphère. Sur le plan du design organisationnel, celui-ci vise à aligner le fonctionnement productif et organisationnel sur celui des écosystèmes, et à réorganiser l’entreprise en fonction des flux et des processus énergétiques souvent intégrés avec ceux d’autres organisations. Enfin, sur le plan de la transformation du système de production et de consommation, cela implique la remise en question de «points de passage obligé», qui ont une influence tant sur les compétences internes que sur la position concurrentielle des entreprises et qui ont de fortes répercussions environnementales.
