Abstract
Le personnage féminin au coeur de la nouvelle « Un jardin au bout du monde » de Gabrielle Roy, Martha Yaramko, est inspiré d'une femme aperçue par la romancière dans les plaines canadiennes sauvages alors qu'elle était journaliste au Bulletin des agriculteurs. Hantée par cette « vision », Gabrielle Roy, avant d'en tirer le récit paru en 1975, en a fait la matière d'au moins cinq avant-textes (dont un scénario et un projet de roman) de formes et de tons variés, deux d'entre eux seulement ayant été achevés et publiés. Après avoir fait ressortir les différences et les ressemblances les plus frappantes entre la nouvelle et ses états antérieurs, on observe que la dynamique créatrice qui se conclut avec « Un jardin au bout du monde » peut être ramenée, d'une part, à un travail d'épuration : passage du portrait social au portrait individuel, dépouillement de la trame événementielle, diminution du nombre de personnages secondaires, resserrement de l'histoire dans le temps et dans l'espace. D'autre part, c'est l'hypothèse d'une cristallisation autour du thème de la création qui permet d'expliquer l'originalité de la nouvelle, hypothèse que l'on valide en relisant le « Jardin » à la lumière de l'essai de Roy intitulé « Terre des Hommes : le thème raconté », écrit en 1967.
