Abstract
Entre les années 1880 et 1930, une importante vague migratoire juive, originaire d’Europe de l’Est, transforme le tissu social de la métropole québécoise. Ces immigrants, qui ont une forte appartenance identitaire, ne tardent pas à mettre sur pied des établissements scolaires privés, porteurs de projets éducatifs qui reflètent les divers horizons culturels, religieux, sociaux et idéologiques auxquels ils appartiennent. Cet article vise à présenter le processus de formation du milieu scolaire juif à Montréal, entre 1874 et 1939, examiné à la fois sous l’angle de la volonté politique des dirigeants communautaires et des aspirations sociales de la population juive. Nous montrons que ce réseau d’écoles privées a participé à la création d’un espace identitaire juif à Montréal en permettant d’assurer la continuité d’une judéité qui prenait ses racines dans l’« Ancien Monde » que les immigrants avaient quitté tout en l’adaptant à la réalité montréalaise et nord-américaine.
