Abstract
Los primeros años de vida de una persona determinan en gran medida su posterior desarrollo como ser humano a lo largo del ciclo vital. Gran parte de las desigualdades en salud y estatus socioeconómico que se observan en edades adultas y avanzadas tienen su origen en la infancia (e incluso en la etapa prenatal). En este artículo se revisa la literatura sobre los impactos de las condiciones en la infancia a lo largo de la vida y se discuten algunos mecanismos sociales y biológicos de transmisión de los efectos de la pobreza en la etapa prenatal, la infancia y edades posteriores. A continuación se analizan diversas experiencias internacionales de políticas sociales dirigidas a combatir la transmisión intergeneracional de la pobreza. El artículo termina con una reflexión y una serie de recomendaciones para evitar los posibles efectos a largo plazo de la actual crisis sobre la salud y el estado socioeconómico de los “niños y niñas de la crisis” en España. The way a person will develop over the lifespan is largely determined by the first few years of life. A substantial share of the inequalities in health and socioeconomic status observed in adult life originate during childhood (and even while in utero). In this paper, we first review the literature on the impact of childhood conditions throughout the life cycle. We next discuss some of the social and biological mechanisms behind the transmission of the effects of poverty during the prenatal period, childhood, and adulthood. We then analyze several international experiences aimed at reducing intergenerational transmission of poverty. The article ends with some critical thoughts and policy recommendations to avoid the possible long-term effects of the current crisis on the health and socioeconomic status of the “children of the crisis” in Spain.
