Abstract
La famille ouvrière de Montréal, il y a vingt-cinq ans, se caractérisait par l'importance des familles d'origine, qui formaient l'essentiel des relations sociales, et par la proximité géographique de cette parenté, souvent présente même dans le milieu de travail. La cohabitation des parents âgés avec un des enfants mariés était la règle. Le développement d'une société davantage centrée sur le couple et les amis apparaît lié au revenu et au passage à la classe moyenne. D'après une recherche effectuée à Québec en 1984, la famille clan est restée le pôle d'identité en milieu populaire, mais le modèle ne pourra se reproduire à la prochaine génération. L'étude est basée sur une analyse secondaire d'un corpus de soixante-treize entrevues, recueillies en 1962-1963.
