Abstract
À partir d’une analyse de contenu des messages présidentiels sur l’état de l’Union de 1982 à 1992, cet article cherche à identifier et à expliquer une quelconque redéfinition du rôle des États-Unis dans le monde à la suite des bouleversements systémiques de la dernière décennie. L’opérationnalisation du concept de rôle selon quatre dimensions fait ressortir la cohérence du discours de chaque président. Mais cette analyse remet aussi en cause la pertinence des variables systémiques pour l’explication de la dynamique du rôle national. Les caractéristiques de ce dernier sont relativement stables ou n’évoluent pas suivant les tendances attendues. Le système international offre l’occasion de changements, mais d’autres variables — cognitives, idéologiques ou plébiscitaires — pourraient mieux expliquer la volonté de les entreprendre et leur contenu.
