Abstract
À partir du commentaire d’une page célèbre de Madame Bovary , dans laquelle le narrateur flaubertien définit la « parole humaine » comme un « chaudron fêlé », cet article analyse comment le roman procède à la mise en scène ironique des discours communs. Contre l’idéal chimérique de la parole pleine, le roman choisit la parole triviale, la parole vide, le retrait de la voix dans l’écriture. C’est ainsi sous l’emblème de ce chaudron fêlé que sont examinées certaines des représentations que le roman donne à l’incomplétude fondamentale de la parole, ou encore le jeu qu’il instaure entre complétude désirée et incomplétude constatée. Ce mouvement général conduit à accentuer certaines solutions esthétiques propres au roman du xx e siècle, notamment dans les figures de l’enfant (en tant qu’ in-fans ), ou dans la problématique du chant impossible. La voix perdue, chez Bernanos, des Forêts ou Quignard, fait office de fétiche en ce qu’elle désigne l’irrémédiable deuil de l’unité originelle. Singulière et pourtant étrangère à celui qui la profère, la voix — parce qu’elle s’absente de sa source physique — est ce par quoi s’exerce le charme toujours recommencé de la littérature.
