Optimization of Optical Delay Lines based on Photonic Crystal Coupled Cavity Waveguides

Abstract
In this paper photonic crystal (PC) based coupled cavity waveguides (CCW) were investigated for their true-time delay properties. Linear CCWs formed in a triangular lattice of air holes etched into a dielectric slab were optimized to obtain maximum possible time delays with minimum transmission losses. Depending upon the PC and cavity configurations used, delays in a wide range (0.1 - 0.6 picoseconds for every 1μm length of CCW) were obtained. These linear waveguides would be ideal to replace conventional phase shifters in the beamforming network of phased array antennas as the effective travel path can be reduced by 52 times as compared to free-space.
