Abstract

Raymond Aron est souvent décrit comme l’un des grands théoriciens du réalisme moderne. Cette manière de l’insérer dans les taxinomies traditionnelles doit cependant être interrogée. Une lecture attentive de son oeuvre permet en effet de constater qu’Aron a élaboré une approche singulière sur la base d’une double critique : celle d’une tradition libérale qui a généré des projets jugés illusoires ; celle d’un réalisme de guerre froide qui s’est mué en idéologie simplificatrice. L’originalité de l’approche aronienne réside donc dans la tentative de surmonter l’opposition classique de ces deux « écoles », en conservant la meilleure part de chacune d’elles. C’est pourquoi on propose d’envisager Raymond Aron comme un théoricien réaliste hétérodoxe, comme le tenant d’un « machiavélisme postkantien ».
