Abstract
C’est par l’application de la micro-histoire, que nous retraçons l’évolution des relations entre catholiques et protestants à Waterloo, Québec, à une époque où le village connaît un développement et une industrialisation importante avant de se stabiliser. Jusqu’à la fin de la première moitié du XIXe siècle, Waterloo ne compte que des habitants protestants. Puis au début des années 1860, le village connaît une forte immigration canadienne-française. Les catholiques forment en 1901 la majorité de la population et cette croissance se poursuivra à une allure régulière. Mais, cette tendance démographique n’est qu’un des nombreux facteurs qui intervient dans les relations entre ces deux communautés chrétiennes. Le poids économique détermine les rapports de forces. Mis à part un nombre impressionnant d’exemples de coopération, on peut avancer que pendant toute la période, l’Église catholique craint le protestantisme, alors que l’indifférence protestante envers l’Église catholique perdure.
