Abstract
This essay interprets The Emperor Jones as a Benjaminian allegory, a traumatic confrontation between the audience and the shocking scenes from America's racial history in which the sudden shifts of reverse chronology as well as the rhythmically induced physiological tension disrupt the expectations of realism to dramatize the genealogy of the national trauma which, as David Blight argues in Race and Reunion, resulted from slavery and the failure of Reconstruction after the Civil War. Using trauma theory, especially that as articulated by Ruth Leys in Trauma: A Genealogy and Cathy Caruth in Unclaimed Experience: Trauma, Narrative, and History, the essay considers the ways in which O'Neill disturbed the master narrative of naturalized racism and national amnesia and the dramatic and theatrical ways in which the trauma to the nation is both embodied in the trauma to Jones and extended to include the audience.
