Abstract
Trois importantes traditions latino-américaines convergent et se superposent dans le texte « La curiosité baroque » de José Lezama Lima, publié en 1957 dans le recueil L’expression américaine : le discours de l’americanismo, l’essai mis au service d’une quête identitaire collective et la théorie du baroque. La lecture critique de ce texte fait ressortir sa complexité essayiste en montrant comment la théorie culturelle qui y est énoncée (ce que le texte dit) est déconstruite par certaines pratiques textuelles. D’une part, la construction identitaire basée sur le paradigme culturel du baroque affirme un engagement essentialiste par rapport à l’identité. D’autre part, le modus operandi rhétorique du texte (ce que le texte fait) rend cet engagement problématique et permet à l’auteur de gagner une distance critique par rapport au discours américaniste. La simultanéité de cette double démarche confère au texte une densité authentiquement essayiste qui contraste avec d’autres écrits sur l’identité latino-américaine, qui sont davantage des manifestes ou des pamphlets que des essais.
