Abstract
De 1826 à 1845, le développement de nouvelles écoles pour les Autochtones de la vallée du Saint-Laurent est marqué par des luttes de pouvoir entre missionnaires catholiques, sociétés protestantes et instituteurs autochtones. Si les missionnaires s’opposent d’abord aux protestants, qui tentent de faire de nouveaux convertis dans les communautés autochtones en créant des écoles, ils cherchent aussi à limiter l’accès à la scolarisation des Amérindiens, même lorsque celle-ci est catholique, afin de maintenir leur rôle politique au sein des villages. Lors de cette période, les missionnaires catholiques font face à certains Autochtones qui utilisent l’éducation, soit pour diffuser la religion protestante, soit pour contester leur autorité au sein des communautés. Ces missionnaires décident de s’opposer à tous les nouveaux projets scolaires qui émergent à Kahnawake, Akwesasne et Odanak, sans jamais tenter eux-mêmes de fonder des écoles catholiques.
