Écrits à une époque où les relations entre « arts » et « métiers » se font plus étroites, À rebours (1884) de Joris-Karl Huysmans et Monsieur de Phocas (1901) de Jean Lorrain thématisent et textualisent une littérature qui, ciselée par l’écrivain, devient orfèvrerie. Le joyau forme une matière narrative, la main manipule à la fois la page et la gemme, la langue est matériau. La métaphore du « texte-bijou » permet ainsi d’instaurer toute une poétique, mais elle inscrit également ces deux romans dans la société fin-de-siècle.
