Abstract
Cet article étudie les répercussions de la montée de l’État-providence au Québec sur la pratique de la charité privée. Il le fait à partir d’un exemple : celui des transformations du soutien laïc aux oeuvres d’assistance catholique dans la ville de Trois-Rivières, entre 1920 et 1965. Notre enquête montre qu’à mesure que s’est consolidé l’État-providence, l’Église trifluvienne a augmenté son effort de mobilisation du soutien laïc aux oeuvres d’assistance qu’elle patronnait, tout en rencontrant à partir des années 1950 quelques obstacles incontournables. Elle révèle aussi que la présence croissante de l’État dans l’assistance a favorisé l’émergence de deux discours cléricaux sur la charité, l’un plus social, l’autre, profondément religieux, mais qui tous deux ont été balayés au moment de la Révolution tranquille.
