EFFECT OF MODERATE EXERCISE ON THE RESISTANCE TO UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS

Abstract
A high incidence of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI), and correspondingly decreased concentrations of immunoglobulin A (IgA) have been reported for both sedentary individuals, and for elite athletes following a period of intense training. The present study examined the symptomatic responses and immune responses of 9 individuals placed on a 12-week program of regular exercise (three 30min aerobic + 15min conditioning sessions/wk at 75% heart rate reserve), compared to 12 sedentary individuals. Changes in fitness (VO2max) were monitored at three time points (initial, mid-point and final evaluations, T1-3, respectively) while changes in salivary concentrations of immunoglobulin A were monitored at initial and final evaluations. During the 12-week period of study, symptoms of URTI were self-recorded daily. Fitness level was significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the exercisers over the course of the study. The number of days with cold symptoms was significantly (p < 0.05) reduced in the exercise group during the last 6 weeks of the training period while no significant difference was found regarding flu symptom days. When comparing severity of symptoms, the exercisers reported significantly fewer days of severe URTI symptoms than the controls during the last 6 weeks regardless their higher rate of sickness days than controls during the first 6 weeks of study. A 36.5% increase in resting slivary IgA has been found in the exercise group after 12 weeks of training in comparison to a 33% decrease in controls' IgA during the same period. These data support the belief that regular, moderate exercise can result in increased salivary IgA levels, which is beneficial to the body's immune response, as showed by the decreased frequency of URTI symptoms.
