Si le terme « présidentiable » désigne communément, dans la vie politique française, un candidat potentiel à l’élection présidentielle crédité de chances sérieuses de figurer au second tour et de l’emporter, il n’en existe cependant pas de définition juridique : est présidentiable celui qui est dit tel. L’espace médiatique est le lieu incontournable de cette labellisation, où se donnent à voir l’endossement de la présidentiabilité par le prétendant et la reconnaissance par ses pairs ; surtout, les journalistes comptent parmi les acteurs principaux de cette intronisation : plus que simples intermédiaires de la publicisation du jeu politique, ces derniers participent à la construction de la notion de « présidentiable ». Bien réelle, la labellisation des présidentiables par les médias est néanmoins à relativiser, dans la mesure où d’autres ressources politiques (parti, expérience gouvernementale) entrent en jeu : il s’agit plutôt d’une consécration, d’une légitimation, que d’une création.
