L'article 55 de la Loi constitutionnelle de 1982 charge le ministre fédéral de la Justice de rédiger une version française des textes constitutionnels canadiens et d'en proposer l'adoption par voie de modification constitutionnelle. Depuis plus de dix ans, la version française préparée par le comité de rédaction mandaté par le ministre est prête. Mais son adoption officielle nécessite l'accord des dix provinces, rendu improbable tant que le Québec n'a pas adhéré à la Constitution. Selon l'auteur, il aurait été préférable d'adopter une version française existante, quitte à y faire des corrections, plutôt que de produire une traduction modernisée qui risque de causer des surprises. D'une manière générale, le travail de rédaction française s'avère tout de même de haute qualité et d'une cohérence exemplaire. En particulier, les fameux articles 91 et 92 de la Loi constitutionnelle de 1867 sont bien traduits, mais on y perd une terminologie traditionnelle. L'auteur critique la disparition du pouvoir de « réserve » du gouverneur général et des lieutenants-gouverneurs, l'altération de la fameuse expression « pour la paix, l'ordre et le bon gouvernement du Canada » et la version proposée du paragraphe 92 (15).
