Les relations entre surveillants de prisons et détenus sont une des clés de la compréhension de l’univers carcéral. Dans le contexte actuel de développement des droits des détenus, d’interventions extérieures dans les décisions prises par les autorités carcérales et de l’essor des intervenants professionnels, l’objet de cet article est d’analyser ces relations. Surveillants et détenus développent soit des relations de conflit, soit des relations d’échange, celles-ci variant selon le lieu et les personnes impliquées. Elles prennent leur origine dans l’intérêt que la personne impliquée peut en retirer et permettent l’instauration d’un équilibre carcéral. Il ressort toutefois que le développement de telles relations non seulement montre une évolution dans les rapports de force survenant entre les membres de chacun des deux groupes, mais encore fait ressortir la solitude et l’atomisation qui se sont développées dans chacun des groupes.
