L’idée d’un engagement proprement « littéraire » permet de reconnaître en littérature une articulation particulière entre modèle éthique et modèle esthétique, fondée sur l’instauration d’une autorité textuelle complexe et ambiguë. Ce mode d’engagement se lie plus particulièrement, dans le roman de la fin du vingtième siècle, à l’ambition d’une transcription fictionnelle de l’histoire — laquelle opère souvent sur le mode d’une figuration textuelle du mouvement par lequel l’écrivain, depuis une position initialement « désengagée », vient à s’exposer au monde en assumant un jugement d’autorité sur son histoire. Si une rhétorique de l’engagement littéraire existe, en effet, elle consiste en une déictique de la responsabilité : en évoquant le modèle de Thomas Bernhard, puis celui, plus récent, d’Imre Kertész, cet article tente de définir les moyens et les fins d’un engagement contemporain de la littérature, liant le plus étroitement possible forme et responsabilité. Dans ces exemples, l’écrivain se retrouve engagé dans et par son oeuvre comme modèle éthique destiné à une appropriation active et critique ; et le lecteur est celui qui, relevant le défi de cette appropriation, reconnaît, sanctionne et déploie le geste d’engagement du littéraire en le confrontant au monde commun.
