Identity Politics and Political Representation of Immigrants: The Perceptions of Latin Americans in Toronto

Abstract
This article analyzes the perceptions that a group of Latin Americans, who live in the city of Toronto, hold with regard to their representational levels in the federal and provincial Canadian parliaments as well as in the city councils. Using original data drawn from 100 interviews and 2 focus groups conducted in the city of Toronto, the findings indicate that disunity, short length of residence, a disadvantaged economic situation, and the lack of an efficient leadership are all perceived as major obstacles to increasing the representational levels of the community.
