Abstract
Réfugié au château de Fontainebleau après la prise de Paris (31 mars 1814), Napoléon ne parvint pas à sauver son Empire, pas plus que le trône du roi de Rome. Il se résolut à abdiquer sans conditions le 6 avril 1814, décision qui devint effective après la signature du traité dit « de Fontainebleau » du 11. Après plusieurs jours de tergiversations et de préparation de son départ pour l’île d’Elbe, dont la souveraineté lui avait été octroyée, l’empereur prit le chemin de l’exil le 20 avril. Avant de monter en voiture, il s’adressa une dernière fois aux dernières troupes restées auprès de lui, soit le Ier régiment des grenadiers de la Garde auquel s’étaient joints une soixantaine d’élèves de l’École polytechnique qui avaient participé vingt jours plus tôt à la défense de la capitale. Les dernières paroles qu’il leur adressa furent improvisées et on n’en connaît pas vraiment le texte, sinon de deuxième main. Que leur dit-il vraiment ? C’est ce que cette note va tenter d’approcher.
