Le batholite de South Mountain, en Nouvelle-Ecosse, est un complexe granitique hyperalumineux qui contient les mineraux caracteristiques suivants: biotite, muscovite, grenat, cordierite, andalusite, ilmenite et rutile. Le rutile est une phase rare d'origine etrangere dans les roches les plus primitives du batholite, et une phase plus commune d'origine magmatique dans les roches moyennement a fortement evoluees du batholithe. Les grains de rutile mesurent de 0.04 a 0.28 mm (rarement, 0.54 mm) et peuvent etre idiomorphes ou (surtout) xenormorphes. De nombreux grains de rutile presents dans les roches les plus fractionnees sont zones de facon soit aleatoire ou oscillatoire. Plus les roches du batholite de South Mountain sont fractionnees, plus le rutile est enrichi en Nb 2 O 5 (0.36-2.28%), Ta 2 O 5 (0.04-0.63%), FeO + MnO (0.22-1.36%), SnO 2 (0.02-0.09%), WO 3 (0.03-0.67%), and ZnO (0.01-0.04%). Le rutile present dans des pegmatites contient des concentrations elevees de (Nb + Ta) et a un rapport Nb/Ta peu eleve, ce qui pourrait signifier que niobium et tantale ne sont pas similairement integres dans une phase fluide. Le rutile d'origine magmatique montre un melange des substitutions (Nb+Ta) et (Fe+Mn), le rutile present dans les pegmatites ayant une substitution principalement vers la columbite-tantalite. Le rutile devient une phase magmatique au milieu de l'evolution chimique du batholite; ce mineral est un bon moniteur de l'enrichissement en Nb-Ta-Sn-W dans le batholite, et la zonation oscillatoire des cristaux est le resultat soit de l'alternance entre presence et absence de fluides, soit d'une croissance controlee par un phenomene de diffusion.
