Abstract
Par cet article, l’auteur se propose d’évaluer le sens que l’on doit donner au bénévolat aujourd’hui alors que cette pratique est soumise à une double tension. D’une part, dans un contexte de globalisation des marchés et de mondialisation des investissements, l’État libéral restructure ses champs d’intervention : il est moins « providentiel ». D’autre part, la famille tend à être moins qu’auparavant le premier lieu de référence en cas de difficultés, dans les sociétés de consommation de masse. Dans un tel contexte, peut-on penser que l’engagement volontaire puisse être l’objet d’un détournement de sens ?
