Abstract
L’activité missionnaire a constitué un espace important d’échanges et de transferts culturels pour l’Église catholique. La congrégation canadienne des Soeurs de Notre-Dame d’Afrique, mieux connue sous le nom de Soeurs blanches, témoigne d’un désir d’adaptation et de compréhension des autres cultures et religions dès son arrivée en Afrique dans les années 1900. Les Soeurs blanches ont développé un regard spécifique issu d’échanges culturels. Au cours du XXe siècle, elles ont adopté des positions à l’avant-garde de l’Église catholique, notamment en ce qui concerne les mouvements nationalistes et indépendantistes. Comment les pratiques missionnaires ont-elles évolué et comment se sont-elles adaptées aux contextes sociaux et culturels des différentes communautés de missionnés? Cet article vise à mieux comprendre l’évolution du discours des Soeurs blanches en ce qui a trait aux rapports entre missionnaires et missionnés, aux transferts culturels dans l’espace missionnaire et à l’adaptation culturelle.
