Abstract
Jusqu'au milieu du siècle, les Canadiens français conservent une fécondité très élevée pour une population vivant dans un pays industriel. Le phénomène a reçu le nom de « Revanche des berceaux». Il n'a pas connu d'explication. Les interprétations classiques, fondées sur l'économie, la religion ou l'instruction, ne résistent pas à l'épreuve scientifique. On peut ainsi constater un parallélisme historique entre la puissance de l'Église et la surnatalité sans qu'il s'agisse d'un lien causal. La «surfécondité» du Canada français semble plutôt répondre à un type particulier de sociabilité qui se distingue par la prégnance des réseaux de parenté.
