Depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le paysage de l'Asie du Sud-Est a considérablement changé. L'espace agricole sédentaire a fait reculer ses limites comme jamais auparavant. Parallèlement, le domaine forestier a fortement régressé; tellement que dans certains pays, comme les Philippines ou la Thaïlande, l'exploitation des forêts ne suffit plus à rencontrer la demande interne. Cette relation entre l'expansion de l'agriculture et le recul des espaces forestiers n'est cependant pas spécifique au Sud-Est asiatique; il s'agit plutôt d'un processus universel, dont d'autres manifestations sont examinées. Cet examen souligne le rôle prépondérant joué par l'État à tous les niveaux du processus.
