Abstract
La mise en perspective du travail artistique des artistes Micheline Beauchemin et Marcelle Ferron dans le contexte du changement sociopolitique et culturel des années 60 au Québec vise à inscrire leur œuvre dans un nouveau rapport au public, dans la recherche d'un nouveau rôle social de l'artiste et dans un processus de questionnement des limites hiérarchiques propres aux arts visuels par la réappropriation de techniques et médiums traditionnels. La monumentalité et le rapport à l'environnement architectural et urbain des œuvres qu'elles réalisèrent à la fin des années 50 et au cours des années 60 mirent en cause la vision traditionnelle qu'on se faisait des femmes artistes : petits formats, visions intimistes, travail privé et solitaire, fonction décorative. De plus, plutôt que d'opter pour la tabula rasapropre à la modernité en art ou encore pour les valeurs strictement formelles et optiques chères aux arts visuels des années 60, elles adoptèrent une stratégie de réintégration de valeurs culturelles dont la légitimité n'était pas encore reconnue dans l'art d'avant-garde.
