La progression des connaissances et l'enrichissement des interprétations sur l'économie québécoise et son rapport à la société sont le résultat de plusieurs entreprises disciplinaires. La première est celle des historiens. À compter des années soixante, les économistes se lancent dans les comparaisons Québec-Ontario, mais étudient aussi la structure industrielle, les stratégies commerciales, le rôle de Montréal et l'intervention gouvernementale. La sociologie économique n'émerge véritablement que dans les années soixante-dix, lorsque la question de la modernisation fait place à celle de la libération nationale. Les études empiriques ont permis de mieux connaître le patronat et les entreprises privés et publiques, sous l'angle notamment de leur contrôle. Les principaux débats ont porté sur la nature de la bourgeoisie et sur le rapport entre les classes sociales et le pouvoir d'État. L'article veut montrer comment l'identification de la réalité québécoise sous l'angle économique est liée au processus d'affirmation de cette société et comment elle reste ambiguë, en raison de son insertion dans l'ensemble canadien.
