Abstract
Nous étudions l’efficacité de la politique de lutte contre le travail des enfants basée sur le commerce éthique dans l’industrie du tapis en Inde. Nous distinguons deux sortes de labels sociaux : ceux proposant une éradication complète du travail des enfants et ceux proposant d’éliminer les pires formes de travail des enfants. Dans une telle perspective les labels sociaux agissent à la fois sur la demande de biens labellisés et sur la demande de travail des enfants. Le rôle d’intermédiation des labels sociaux consiste à mettre en relation les consommateurs et les producteurs en informant les premiers sur les conditions de production du bien labellisé. Leur fiabilité est essentiellement limitée par la difficulté de contrôler les conditions réelles de fabrication des produits, à travers la sous-traitance. Ces pratiques se perpétuent donc malgré la labellisation des firmes exportatrices.
