Abstract
Abstract Simple, physically based, approximations are used to obtain solutions to the exact, but intractable, equations that describe the evolution of the moments of the probability density function of a scalar (contaminant) released in a turbulent (environmental) flow. The effects of molecular diffusivity are assessed by comparing these solutions with the known results for the non‐physical case of zero molecular diffusivity. The results are also compared with experimental results from a steady source in wind tunnel, grid, turbulence. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
