Posant l’hypothèse que, dans le choix d’une langue d’écriture par les autorités publiques aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles, la capacité de la langue vernaculaire française de dire la vérité au même titre que le latin fut un enjeu crucial, cet article montre le lien entre ce problème et le débat sur la vérité qui hanta la littérature française à la même époque.
