Abstract
Plusieurs changements physiologiques et biochimiques accompagnent le vieillissement et sont susceptibles d’affecter le métabolisme des substances chimiques et la réponse de l’organisme. Une revue de la littérature a été effectuée afin d’identifier ces changements et leur impact potentiel sur la santé des travailleurs vieillissants. Les principaux effets recensés sont une diminution des fonctions rénale et hépatique de même qu’une diminution du débit cardiaque avec l’âge. La résultante finale observée le plus souvent est une augmentation du temps requis pour éliminer les substances de l’organisme. Certaines études suggèrent également une réponse ou un effet plus important chez la personne âgée, comparativement aux individus plus jeunes, et ce, pour une même concentration sanguine de la substance toxique.
