Résumé Rien de plus américain, en apparence, que Le Matou d'Yves Beauchemin, roman urbain qui raconte les aventures d'un jeune Québécois apprenant les règles du jeu capitaliste. Cependant, une lecture centrée sur le personnage de Ratablavasky permet de constater la permanence, chez notre auteur, non seulement de certaines traditions françaises (Rabelais, La Fontaine), mais aussi d'un système culturel bien québécois portant l'empreinte d'un attachement aux valeurs "spirituelles" aussi bien que d'une peur mêlée de fascination à l'égard de l'étranger. En tenant compte également d'autres romans du même auteur (L'Enfirouapé, Juliette Pomerleau), on peut suivre les étapes d'un travail de décantation idéologique par l'écriture au bout duquel ce qui, jadis, relevait de la "théocratie-, fonde une charité sans emphase et une nouvelle identité québécoise qui se cristallise autour du thème de la chaleur humaine née de l'expérience du non-pouvoir marquant la condition des minoritaires. Cette analyse donne lieu à des considérations plus globales sur les évolutions de longue durée au cours desquelles une société peut élaborer des normes et des valeurs soumises à un travail permanent de mise en question et de renouvellement.
