Sur la base des données de 1983, se trace le tableau des «technopôles» canadiens. On en analyse le poids, la composition, l'évolution et le dynamisme. Montréal s'impose comme le deuxième centre de technologie avancée au Canada, derrière la région de Toronto. Moins diversifiée que la métropole et bien davantage peuplée de firmes de petite taille, la région montréalaise apparaît à première vue plus fragile. Cette année-là, 68% des entreprises y avaient moins de 50 employés et 59% avaient été créées après 1972. Cependant, de 1979 à 1983, les firmes subissent une excellente croissance de l'emploi de 9,62% par an, malgré que près du tiers d'entre elles n'aient connu aucun accroissement de leurs effectifs.
