Abstract
L’analyse sociolinguistique met en évidence divers cheminements possibles conduisant au transfert d’une langue usuelle à une autre. Les résultats du recensement de 1971 et de quelques autres enquêtes suggèrent en particulier l’existence au Canada français d’un bilinguisme familial et d’un va-et-vient linguistique pouvant s’étaler sur plusieurs générations. Les mêmes sources confirment néanmoins qu’au Québec, cette hésitation linguistique relative ne se solde pas moins par un émiettement du groupe culturel français. Quelques recommandations précises sont formulées quant aux données démolinquistiques à recueillir dans le but de permettre une plus juste appréciation du cheminement à long terme du bilinguisme et des transferts linguistiques, surtout si l’on veut être en mesure d’observer dans l’avenir l’émergence possible d’un bilinguisme stable chez la minorité canadienne-française.
