Abstract
Au siècle des Lumières, l’érémitisme est un phénomène marginal pour l’Église catholique qui lui préfère les ordres missionnaires. Le cas de Toussaint Cartier, qui vécut sur l’île Saint-Barnabé au large de Rimouski de 1728 jusqu’à sa mort en 1767, pourrait a priori donner à penser que la Nouvelle-France était plus favorable à ce type de vocation. Or, tel n’est manifestement pas le cas : le témoignage du marquis de Montcalm, la condamnation de l’érémitisme par le pape Benoît XIV, le cas de l’ermite de Trois-Pistoles au début du XVIII e siècle et les dispositions de l’ancien droit civil à l’égard des ermites constituent autant de points de vue qui éclairent d’un jour nouveau la vocation énigmatique et problématique de Toussaint Cartier pour les institutions de son temps.
