Abstract
Dans cet article, nous décrivons, dans un premier temps, diverses caractéristiques du contexte historique, démographique et socio-politique canadien, influençant la capacité de ce pays à profiter de l’immigration dans une stratégie de promotion du plurilinguisme. Nous comparons ensuite les modèles d’enseignement des langues d’origines mis en place dans trois provinces canadiennes, l’Ontario, l’Alberta et le Québec, ainsi que les débats qu’ils ont suscités, à la lumière d’une typologie des objectifs et des modalités d’implantation de tels programmes. En conclusion, nous proposons une réflexion sur l’éclairage que le cas canadien est susceptible d’apporter à une meilleure compréhension des dilemmes actuels dans l’enseignement des langues d’origine dans d’autres sociétés.
