Abstract
La poétique des symbolistes, qui place l’idée au centre d’une symbolique verbale exigeant du lecteur une herméneutique à la fois intellectuelle et sensuelle, s’inspire de l’art mystique des ymagiers tailleurs de pierre et des moines poètes de l’antiphonaire. Ce recours à une conception mystique de l’art ne fait pas pour autant l’économie de la matière dont elle se veut aussi l’herméneute. Malgré les accusations d’archaïsme que cette poétique eut à subir de la part de l’idéologie progressiste de la IIIe République, elle rejoint les avancées les plus neuves de l’épistémologie du temps : dans leurs légendes dorées, les symbolistes envisagent la matière verbale comme une transformatrice aléatoire d’énergie.
