Les origines de l’actuelle politique linguistique quebecoise remontent aux annees 1960. A cette epoque, l’on avait constate certaines realites fort inquietantes pour les Quebecois francophones. D’une part, les immigrants «allophones» (c’est-a-dire qui ne parlaient ni l’anglais ni le francais) envoyaient majoritairement leurs enfants a l’ecole anglaise plutot qu’a l’ecole francaise. Comme le taux de natalite des Quebecois francophones commencait a baisser considerablement a la meme epoque, la situation majoritaire des francophones se serait trouvee menacee a long terme si ces tendances avaient perdure. D’autre part, le francais occupait une position subordonnee a celle de l’anglais dans la vie economique et sociale. A partir de ces constatations, le premier objectif de la politique linguistique sera de ramener les enfants des immigrants a l’ecole francaise; le deuxieme consistera a rehausser le prestige et l’utilite de la langue francaise dans la vie economique et sociale, de facon a inciter les non-francophones a l’utiliser, pour qu’elle devienne la «langue commune» (ou langue de contact) entre la maI
