Abstract
Written from the perspective of a parent who is also an educational researcher, this article illuminates differences in cultivation that were lived and told, and relived and retold, by the author and her son. It tells of how a teenage male storied changes he experienced in his schooling when the family moved over 2300 miles, and his school context changed from that of a large, public school in western Canada to that of a small, private school in the mid-southern USA. Clandinin and Connelly's notion of cultivation is used in this work to make sense of the two narratives that are presented and re-presented. The idea that students, like teachers and principals, have knowledge communities, is advanced. The reflective work particularly shows how family members can become important parts of students' communities of knowing, especially during times of transition. In the final analysis, the piece transcends the notion of one form of cultivation being preferable to another and emphasizes the fruitful making of a life.
