Au Québec, l’école a été la dernière institution à être complètement laïcisée (en 2000). La sécularisation avait toutefois travaillé de l’intérieur l’institution scolaire. L’école québécoise est demeurée ouverte à la diversité religieuse, par l’enseignement de la culture religieuse et par le droit de porter un signe religieux, pour les enseignants et les élèves. Il reste que la place de la religion à l’école prend place dans les débats sociaux sur la place de la religion dans les institutions publiques.
