Dans le débat sur la déontologie, les syndicats de journalistes peinent à faire entendre leur voix. Pourtant, à l’origine de la création du Syndicat des journalistes en 1918, il y avait la volonté de moraliser la profession, exprimée par la charte adoptée la même année. La création de la carte de presse en 1935 était, entre autres, motivée par les mêmes justifications. À l’usage, pourtant, tant pour des raisons juridiques que par manque de consensus dans la profession, la Commission de la carte ne joue pas le rôle d’organisme de contrôle déontologique réclamé par certains. Mais les dérapages ont souvent aussi pour origine les conditions matérielles et économiques d’exercice de la profession, terrain privilégié de la compétence des syndicats de journalistes.
