Dans l'Espagne inquisitoriale et misogyne de la Contre Réforme, Thérèse d'Avila vit des expériences mystiques intraduisibles en mots. Sous l'ordre de ses confesseurs, elle doit écrire sur son expérience. L'auteure se donne deux buts : parler en tant que femme et exprimer en mots l'union divine innommable. L'analyse de la rhétorique thérésienne montrera que l'écrivaine arrive à ses fins. Plus encore, parce qu'elle affirme sa féminité, elle peut écrire sur Dieu. Cependant et paradoxalement, son discours sanctionne l'autorité ecclésiale masculine et renforce les préjugés sur l'infériorité féminine.
